She was Hawaii’s last monarch, and surely the most beloved. She served as Queen from the death of her brother, King Kalakaua in 1891, until 1893. She ruled wisely, with compassion and fairness, determined to protect the heritage and dignity of the Hawaiian people.
Even today, Queen Lili'uokalani represents the height of Hawaii’s monarchy; its grace; its pride, its progress, and the quality of its lifestyle.
In the part of the island of Oahu now known as Waikiki, Queen Lili'uokalani tended her famous gardens. Their blossoms and shrubs and foliage were a source of pride for all Hawaiians.
Between her gardens and the majestic Diamond Head crater, taro fields and an occasional palm tree provided the vista. Today, the area is modernized and urbanized, serving the people of Hawaii and visitors to the 50th state. It is called Waikiki.
